Introducing Conseal

In this post

We've built a desktop app called Conseal that finds and redacts sensitive information in your documents, entirely on your machine. It's the first and only AI-powered redaction tool that works fully locally: nothing you redact is ever uploaded, processed on a server, or seen by us. Conseal is available today for Mac and Windows at conseal.ai.

Why we built it

A professional such as a lawyer, clinician, or consultant needs to share a document, so they redact it by hand. On a long file, that means hunting through dozens of pages for every name, number, and identifier, and then checking their own work. It's slow, and it's easy to get wrong: one missed line in one exhibit, and confidential information walks out the door.

Then AI arrived, and a second version of the story appeared. The same professionals started pasting documents into AI tools to summarize, draft, and analyze, because the tools are genuinely useful. But a document that hasn't been truly redacted doesn't become safe just because the chat window looks private. Once sensitive data leaves your machine, you no longer control where it goes.

So the problem had two halves: manual redaction doesn't scale, and the obvious shortcut leaks. We built Conseal to fix both.

What's different

What makes it different

Your documents never leave your machine, not even the text

Everything Conseal does, from AI detection to redaction to restoration, runs locally on your computer. There is no upload, no cloud processing, no server that ever touches your files. Turn off your internet connection and Conseal keeps working.

No telemetry

The app doesn't track what you do. It connects to the internet for exactly three things: installation, signing in, and updates. That's the whole list, and we published it, in plain English, in our FAQ.

×4×2×1

AI that understands context

Conseal doesn't just pattern-match digits. It reads a document the way a careful reviewer would, recognizing names, identifiers, dates, and account details across legal, healthcare, financial, and HR documents. Then it shows you everything it found, grouped and counted, so you stay in control of every decision.

Redact or anonymize, your choice

Conseal gives you two ways to protect a document, and the difference matters.

Jane Doe
Redact
Anonymize
[PERSON_1]

Redaction blacks the information out. Where a name or number was, the reader sees a solid black box. It's the right choice when the document goes to someone who should never see what was there: a court filing, a records request, a document for the other side.

Anonymization replaces each value with a meaningful label instead. Jane Doe becomes [PERSON_1], her hospital becomes [ORG_1], and every repeat mention gets the same label. The document stays completely readable; it just no longer says who it's about. Crucially, anonymization preserves the context of the document. [PERSON_1] was admitted to [ORG_1] on [DATE_1] keeps every relationship intact, which is exactly what you need for the second version of the story above.

Use any AI tool, safely

That's what unlocks the workflow that used to be a risk. Anonymize a document, and Conseal keeps the mapping between labels and real values in a key file that stays on your device. Send the labeled version to any AI tool you like. Summarize it, edit it, analyze it: because the labels preserve context, the AI understands the document fully and does its best work. When you're done, Conseal re-stitches the original values back into the result, right on your machine. You get the full power of AI on your documents, and the AI never sees a single piece of sensitive information.
